Mountaineer postpones 14-peak challenge
Alan Hinkes
Mr Hinkes reaches the top of Annapurna in Nepal

Mountaineer Alan Hinkes has decided to abandon his plans to reach the summit of Mount Kanchenchunga - for this year.

The Northallerton climber is trying to conquer the world's 14 highest mountains.

Last month he had to be airlifted to safety in the Himalayas after becoming seriously ill with bronchitis.

Although he has now recovered there is not enough time to trek up the mountain before the weather turns for the worse.

Challenge 8000

Mr Hinkes began his quest in 1987, under the banner of Challenge 8000.

He has completed 12 of his challenging climbs, including Mount Everest and K2.

It was already the second attempt to climb Mount Kanchenchunga - last time he fell and broke his arm.

The prolific climber will return to Nepal at the end of May 2004 when he will take part in the Everest 50th anniversary celebrations.
