Hospital sickness bug infects 50
Hospital ward
The wards will be deep cleaned before being reopened
Three wards at a North Yorkshire hospital have been closed to new admissions after an outbreak of a vomiting and diarrhoea bug.

Managers at Harrogate District Hospital took the decision after more than 50 people developed viral gastroenteritis.

Farndale, Byland elderly ward and Granby medical ward have been closed.

A spokeswoman said there had been a number of cases since October, but the situation had become an "area for serious concern" in the past week.

Winter vomiting disease

More than 40 patients and 12 members of staff have developed the virus.

A number of visitors have also contracted the bug commonly known as winter vomiting disease.

Strict control measures have been put in place and all relatives and staff have to wash their hands before and after visits to infected wards.

A hospital spokeswoman added that the three wards would be "thoroughly deep-cleaned" once the outbreak was contained and then reopened.

She said it was important people who had recovered from the illness did not to return to the hospital until they were clear of symptoms for at least 48 hours.
