Evening parking charges have proved unpopular
A decision not to scrap controversial evening parking changes in York has been defended by council leaders.

Councillors resisted calls for parking after 1800 BST in the city centre to again be free.

On Tuesday night they agreed a series of concessions including replacing double yellow lines on some streets with parking meters.

Restaurant and bars in the city centre claim they have lost money since the evening charges began in March.

Councillors also approved an extension to the operating hours of the Askham Bar Park and Ride scheme until 2300 BST.

The authority claims a complete u-turn on the scheme would cost around 500,000 in lost income.

The changes are expected to come into force in November.
