Drivers now have to pay to park in the evening

Council officers have been asked to conduct a review of the arrangements which started in March and have attracted strong criticism.

In particular, the review will look at the decision to charge for evening parking in the city centre.

But council leader Steve Galloway said he remained committed to encouraging more people to use public transport, walk or cycle.

"We are the most successful transport authority in the country in achieving a change to people's travel habits," he claimed.

And he said that York's attraction is even greater as "a clean, safe and relatively uncongested destination".

However, some restaurants and bars in the city centre say they have lost business since the evening charges were introduced.

Some charities have moved meetings to other parts of the city.

Cllr Galloway said it was that possible permits could be introduced to allow voluntary workers to park for free.

He also wants consideration to be given to a late night bus service to at least one of the park and ride car parks on the edge of the city.

People who live and work in York have until 13 August to give their views.
