Evening parking charges have proved unpopular

Charges for parking after 1800 were introduced in the spring and have been widely criticised by bar and restaurant owners and their staff.

However, the council is proposing to replace the evening hourly charge with a flat-rate ticket costing �1 for York residents.

And the Askham Bar park and ride bus service may be extended until 2300.

November changes

The proposed changes follow a review of city centre parking carried out by council officers.

The proposals will be discussed by the executive of the City of York Council and if approved are likely to be implemented in November.

Council officers also say that consultations should take place with charitable organisations to create parking concessions for key workers.

And metered evening parking could be introduced on some streets where it is currently banned 24 hours a day.

These include Goodramgate, Fossgate, Lendal and Blake Street.
