Free swimming scheme 'a success'
Swimming pool - generic
More than 17,000 children signed up for the scheme
Thousands of children have taken up a council's offer to use swimming pools for free in a bid to combat obesity.

Wigan Borough Council told those under 16 they could swim for free from April this year.

More than 17,000 children took up the offer, and now 60% more are swimming every week than they were last year.

The Freestyle scheme was set up by Wigan Leisure and Culture Trust (WLCT) and Wigan Council to use any of the borough's five public swimming pools.

Jane Bent, Sports Development Officer in Wigan, said the scheme has been a huge success.
