Free swim offered to 5,000 locals
Council chiefs have been awarded 12,500 to enable them to offer up to 5,000 people free swimming sessions.

The Department of Health funding has been won by Dorset County Council to fund sessions at nine pools.

The aim of the Swim for Health sessions, which will be held on 25 and 28 March, is to get as many people as possible to rediscover the pastime.

The council is one of 21 local authorities to be included in the national Communities for Health scheme.

Dave Franks, the county council's sports officer, said: "Swimming is one of the best forms of exercise you can do, whatever your age and ability.

"If someone hasn't been swimming for a while, Dorset Swim for Heath gives them a chance to get back in the swim for free, and we're hoping it will remind them what a great way it is to get fit and have fun at the same time."
