Children urged to take the plunge
Swimming lesson
Livingstone says he hopes the scheme will produce sporting stars
Youngsters are being encouraged to take the plunge with free swimming sessions in five London boroughs.

Children under 16 from Greenwich, Hackney, Newham, Tower Hamlets and Waltham Forest can swim for free at their local pools.

The Kids Swim for Free scheme will run from 24 to 31 October.

The Mayor of London, who has helped to fund the sessions, said he hoped it would help produce the sporting stars of the future.

The Mayor said he hoped to see talented swimmers competing in a London Olympic Games in 2012 as a result of the scheme.

Sebastian Coe, chairman of London 2012, said: "I would love to see a young person from the East End swim for gold in London in 2012.

"I hope every local child will be inspired to get out and take the plunge."

The scheme has also been funded by the London Development Agency and London 2012.
