Youngsters urged to make a splash
James Hickman
The free sessions will run over the half term holiday
Olympic swimmer James Hickman will be encouraging school children in London to take the plunge.

Hickman, who has represented the UK at three Olympics, will join youngsters at East Ham Leisure Centre on Tuesday to launch the Kids Swim Free scheme.

The scheme offers children aged between five and 16 free swimming sessions in five London boroughs.

The Mayor of London said he hoped the sessions helped to produce the sporting stars of the future.

Free swimming sessions will be available in Greenwich, Hackney, Newham, Tower Hamlets and Waltham Forest.

Ken Livingstone, who is behind the scheme, said: "Young people in these boroughs are already doing a lot more swimming as a result of Kids swim Free, showing how the London 2012 bid is already having a positive impact on the lives of young people."

The free swimming sessions will be available from 13 to 20 February.
