Thousands of schoolchildren have enjoyed the day off as more than 400 schools in London were forced to close after heavy snowfall. Hillingdon, Croydon, Brent, Barnet, Hounslow and Bromley councils were among those that turned pupils away.
The weather caused disruption and delays on many tube lines and mainline rail services in the morning.
Despite teams of staff working to keep Heathrow Airport open, more than 100 flights were cancelled on Thursday.
A spokesman said specialist equipment had been used to ensure all the runways and taxiways remained open.
But he added: "It is the responsibility of airlines to de-ice their aircraft and delays can be caused if there are problems."
Revised timetable
On the Underground, Jubilee Line experienced minor delays while Monument station on Circle and District Line was closed due to flooding.
Flights from London City Airport were also disrupted.
Virgin Trains were operating on a revised timetable from London Euston to Manchester Piccadilly, Liverpool Lime Street and Birmingham New Street.
Midland Mainline passengers have been told that some services on Thursday evening have been cancelled because of "adverse weather conditions".
Eurostar was running with 30-minute delays.
Roads remained clear as many decided to stay back home.
