Rail closure to affect passengers

Lincoln railway station
Network Rail said the work was vital

Passengers may make a permanent switch away from Lincoln train station due to a summer closure, bosses have admitted. Rail services will be disrupted for six weeks while work is carried out to modernise the track and signals and upgrade the level crossing.

Officials from East Midlands Trains said that a three-week shutdown last year led to some passengers permanently making other arrangements.

The company is planning a publicity campaign to persuade people to return.

Commercial director David Hornethey said: "We did see passenger numbers fall after the blockade last summer.

"So what we are doing this year is putting in place arrangements to make sure as many people as possible come back to use the train after the summer."

The final phase of a 55m project to renew the station area will see it close on 19 July and reopen on 1 September.

The level crossing on High Street will also close from 7 August to 16 August.

Network Rail said the work was vital to bring signalling equipment up to modern standards.
