Lincoln Central train station will close for more than six weeks this summer. The final phase of a 55m project to renew railway tracks and signalling in the area will begin following a three-week shutdown last August. The station will close on 19 July, and reopen on 1 September after having state-of-the-art signals fitted along with 22 sets of switches and crossings. The level crossing on High Street will also close from 7 August to 16 August. CCTV is being fitted to the crossing which will see it closed to vehicles, but pedestrian access will be maintained during business hours. The main line work will see the old semaphore signalling system, characterised by "arms" on a signal gantry being raised or lowered to control the movement of trains, replaced by a system using computer controlled coloured LED lights.
