Fire control staffing questioned
Firefighters claim Lincolnshire people need to know how a merger of its fire control centre with surrounding counties, could affect them.

Lincs' chief fire officer Alan Riddett says both public safety and the service offered would improve.

But the Fire Brigade's Union thinks the public will be put in danger. It is lobbying the government for each East Midland county to keep a control room.

Barry Foster from Lincolnshire FBU said people need to know the staffing facts.

'Fewer staff'

He said the current Lincoln control room is manned by three or four people and there are health and safety concerns if there is less then two on duty.

But he claims there would only be two members of staff covering Lincs in a regional control room.

No site has been picked for the proposed combined centre to replace the existing Lincs, Leics, Notts, Derbys and Northants rooms.

The government wants about a dozen regional control rooms across the country to replace the existing 40-plus centres run by county brigades.
