A temporary merger of Northants and Leics fire control rooms is rejected |
Plans to merge Northamptonshire fire control centre temporarily with Leicestershire's have been dropped. It was to be the first step in a programme to establish a regional control centre for the East Midlands.
The plans to merge came from government recommendations to establish one major fire control room per region.
But the county council has said it will now wait until a new regional centre opens in 2006 or 2007 and has opted out of the temporary arrangement.
The aim of the proposed merger with Leicestershire had been to make sure fire calls were dealt with efficiently up to the time of the changeover.
Now systems currently being used by control room staff in the county will simply be upgraded.
Northants County Council said it believed this was the most cost effective and least disruptive option and staff will no longer have to face two moves during a short period of time.
