Officials play down market worry
Market stall with vegetables
The market is located in Leicester city centre
Fears that a redevelopment of Leicester's covered market could lead to stall holders being moved aside have been rejected by officials.

The city council is looking at turning the covered site into a piazza style square for cafes and entertainment.

Traders said they were surprised and worried by the news as none of them had been consulted.

But they have now been told plans are at an early stage and they will be helped through any changes.

Stallholders approached councillors and council staff who were in the market celebrating National Markets Week to highlight their concerns.

But councillor Robert Wann, who had previously raised the possibility of redevelopment, moved to reassure them.

He said: "Everybody will be looked after. This is going out for consultation to the Market's Federation, everybody will be given a say.

"The most important thing is to make sure we protect the existing stallholders and their businesses are not affected."
