Market plans include 25m grant

Support is being sought for a lottery bid for 25m to improve Leicester Market and Market Place.

A report is going before the city council cabinet and, if approval is given, officers will submit an outline bid early in the New Year.

Supporters have said the city has one of the oldest markets in England and it is a big feature in the city centre.

Over 2.5 million people visit Leicester markets each year but they have been criticised for looking shabby.

Councillor John Mugglestone said: "We need to spend money on upgrading the market area to meet modern standards, and fit in with the other regeneration projects in the city centre.

"If we support this bid, and the bid is successful, we will be able to update and transform the whole of the market area."
