Manager defends dirty city market
Market stall with vegetables
The market is located in Leicester city centre
Bosses at Leicester Market have defended the site's standards after it was branded one of the city's dirtiest.

BBC Radio Leicester listeners criticised the amount of rubbish at the site, despite city council workers clearing it every night.

Manager Nick Rhodes said people have to realise the popularity of the market means it will generate a lot of waste.

He said: "We are the largest covered outdoor market in Europe so the actual turnover we have is colossal."

He explained that because the market is outdoors it is "going to make rubbish".

"It is the fact of the business," Mr Rhodes added.

Some listeners who complained about the amount of rubbish at the market agreed traders make a lot of effort to clear up each night.

Late-night revellers are partly to blame for the debris at the site, say some traders, because it stays open after the market closes.
