Farmers' market returns
Farmers market
The market will only use produce from local farmers

Leicester is hosting its first farmers' market for several years.

The event, to be held monthly, is based in the Market Square.

Similar farmers' markets have been running in towns around Leicestershire - including Loughborough, Melton and Hinckley - for years.

But there has not been one in Leicester since the Foot and Mouth epidemic two years ago.

The city market will run on the last Wednesday of every month, and will only be open to farmers based in Leicestershire or the surrounding region.

The market's manager says he wants shoppers to be confident that everything being offered for sale is from local farms.

Produce will include honey, meat and eggs, pickles, wine and cider. Most of it will be organic.

It is hoped the monthly event will attract new regular customers to the market, and also increase sales for other traders.
