Calls to scrap ancient market ban

Farmers cannot trade freely in Blaby
A councillor has called for an ancient charter which prevents a Leicestershire town from holding regular farmers markets to be scrapped.

The 500-year-old document allows the city council to limit the number of markets held within six-and-two-third miles of Leicester.

Ernie White, leader of Blaby District Council, said the charter was outdated and was affecting business in the area.

The city council is prepared to double the number of markets allowed.

However, city councillors have insisted they will not scrap the charter altogether.
