Police blitz on underage drinkers

Police are patrolling the streets looking for underage drinkers
Police are cracking down on underage drinking in Leicester city centre over the Christmas season.

Officers are patrolling areas around St Margaret's bus station and looking for young people drinking in the street.

Police have seized alcohol from underage drinkers, dispersed groups causing a nuisance and in some cases escorted young people home.

A spokesman said officers also had the power to seize alcohol from people believed to be giving it to children.

'Encouraging result'

Police and trading standards have been organising tests at off-licences to see whether staff will serve youngsters aged under 18.

Pc Lisa Kelly said: "The positive from this campaign is that the majority of off-licences are actively challenging underage customers.

"Out of a total of 11 premises tested across the city, only one off-licence served alcohol without challenging the young person.

"This is a very encouraging result."
