Buses are to travel between Leicester and Nottingham East Midlands Airport (NEMA) two years after similar bus links came to Nottingham and Derby. The new direct link, partly funded by the East Midlands Development Agency (EMDA) is due to start in the autumn.
Airport managers hope the service will reduce congestion and create more work opportunities for people in Leicester.
Up until now passengers had to divert from the airport via Loughborough to get to Leicester.
The airport itself, as well as city and town councils from Leicestershire, Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire have all contributed funding to the scheme.
EMDA had faced criticism over the plan, because some people believed the service encouraged tourists to leave Leicestershire.
