Public consulted on park-and-ride
Park and ride
Many people living near the sites oppose the plans
Consultation has started on a proposed 9m park-and-ride scheme for Leicester.

Leicestershire County Council and Leicester City Council are encouraging people to have their say on plans for the Fosse Park facility.

A leaflet with details of the proposals will be available in libraries, post offices and other public buildings.

A questionnaire will also be included so people can give their comments before the consultation exercise closes on 30 December.

1,000 spaces

The park-and-ride site will be linked to the city centre by a fast shuttle bus service.

The consultation proposals are also available on both councils' websites.

A public exhibition on the proposals will be shown in the Shires shopping centre on 2 and 3 December.

David Parsons, leader of the county council, said: "Our new car park will be in a busy area but we will take steps to ensure that the introduction of the service results in reduced traffic congestion and noise there."

The scheme would see the construction of a landscaped 1,000-space car park on a site opposite to the police headquarters on Narborough Road South.

Construction could start in the summer of 2009 with the service opening in 2010.

Previous plans two years ago to locate it on Aylestone Meadows were turned down by county councillors because of traffic concerns.
