Park and ride still faces opposition
New research has revealed sharply mixed views over multi-million pound park and ride plans in Leicester.

The majority of residents living near the proposed sites do not want the three park and ride schemes .

But a survey found most people using the city centre said they would use the facility if it goes ahead.

The city and county councils are planning to build new parking in Aylestone, Glenfield and Birstall.

Funding bid

The 25m Leicester west transport scheme will see 2,500 parking spaces being created on the suburban sites and frequent buses provided to ferry people into the city centre.

Research by the city council has revealed 60% of residents living near the three proposed sites object to the plans.

In Aylestone that figure rose to 72% saying the site was inappropriate.

But in an on-street survey of more than 500 people, 95% said they would travel into the city centre more often if park and ride services were provided.

Both the city and county council cabinets now have to decide whether to back the plans.

If approval is given they will bid for government funding at the end of July.
