Park and ride on hold
Park and ride
Many people living near the sites oppose the plans
The leader of Leicestershire county council says he is disappointed plans for three new park and ride sites have been put back.

The idea was for new sites in Birstall, Aylestone and Glenfield, but residents had objected to the plans.

Now the city council has decided not to bid for government money for 12 months, so that an alternative to the Aylestone site can be identified.

The 25m Leicester West Transport Scheme would see 2,500 parking spaces being created on the suburban sites and frequent buses provided to ferry people into the city centre.

Public money

While the majority of those living near the proposed sites were against the plans, the feelings ran highest in Aylestone.

But many councillors feel the delay is unwanted.

County council leader, David Parsons, said: "We are actually very disappointed.

"Leicestershire County Council has wanted the scheme to go ahead on three sites this year.

"We are waiting to see what the city says but until we can put a coherent three schemes on the stocks, then the cost-benefit analysis won't stack up and we won't get public money."
