Primary school pupils in Kent are being taught how to keep their environment clean through the magic of theatre. A theatre group, backed by the Clean Kent Campaign, is visiting 60 schools offering interactive workshops about litter and the problems it causes.
It is part of a wider campaign aimed at improving the environment and cracking down on graffiti and vandalism.
Kent County Council is helping to fund the project, which it is hoped will be taken into secondary schools next year.
The theatre group, known as Circus Take-Away, offers a mix of drama, games and question and answer sessions.
School children are told what litter is, who is responsible for it, and what to do if they come under pressure to drop some.
The initiative is part of the Clean Kent Campaign, which was launched two years ago.
Co-ordinator Melanie Price said the aim was to "clean up, reduce rubbish fires and crack down on flytippers".
Wendy Skinner, head teacher of St Marks CofE Primary School in Eccles, said the theatre group had left a lasting impression on pupils.
"Things that were packed up in a lot of plastic and boxes suddenly disappeared from children's lunches completely," she said.
