Ryanair opens south England base
Ryanair
Ryanair is expected to benefit the region's business and tourism
The low-budget airline Ryanair has chosen Bournemouth Airport as its new base in south England.

The airport competed against other airports in Europe to become the carrier's 24th European base.

Peter Duffy, Bournemouth Airport's managing director, said it was "fantastic" news which would enhance investment and tourism in the region.

With the carrier also doubling flights from Bournemouth, Mr Duffy said passengers now had more options.

The carrier currently flies from Bournemouth to Alicante, Barcelona, Dublin, Glasgow, Marseille, Milan and Pisa.

From April it will base a new 737-800 Boeing aircraft there which will operate to Malaga, Murcia, Nantes, Palma and Wroclaw.

Sean Coyle, Ryanair's director of scheduled revenue said it increased Ryanair's capacity to fly one million passengers per year to the region.

He said the investment was expected to result in visitor spend of 60m per year, sustain 1,000 jobs in the local economy and save passengers 40m annually as a result of lower cost fares.
