Garden's student housing dropped

The new arts centre is expected to open by 2009
Plans to build a student accommodation block on the site of a former concert hall have been dropped.

Bournemouth Borough Council was granted planning permission in April for a 20m arts centre on the Winter Gardens site.

The plans for a block of 176 student accommodation units behind the new centre have now been dropped and the council is reviewing its options.

The planned development also includes the arts base, public gardens and performance space.

Cllr Bob Chapman said: "People do not want a large block of student flats on this key town centre site.

"We have heard this message loud and clear, and are taking positive action to address an issue which is a real concern to our residents.

"We remain totally committed to improving Bournemouth's cultural diversity and we have not yet ruled anything in or anything out on the Winter Gardens site. This is still the case."

The centre has been planned in partnership with the Arts Institute, Bournemouth University, Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra and Dance South West.
