Drunk-driver tip-off calls rise
Breath test
Police will continue to target motorists throughout the year
Residents are being encouraged to tip off police about drunk drivers as a special Christmas and New Year campaign in Dorset is hailed a success.

Of the 161 motorists held following positive breath tests, police say 50 were stopped after receiving reports from the public.

Road traffic crash injuries have fallen by 17.5% compared with the previous year - from 235 to 200 - say police.

Chief Insp Rick Dowell believes a "hard core" of drivers still flout the law.

The head of Dorset Police Operations tactical group - which includes the road policing unit - said: "Having reached the end of this year's drink drive campaign, I am extremely disappointed that a hard core of drivers continue to ignore our advice and continue to drive after drinking alcohol.

"The fact that 28 drivers tested positive following collisions perfectly illustrates the fact that drinking alcohol really does dramatically increase the likelihood of being involved in a crash.

"Although the drink drive campaign has come to an end, we still have a wealth of intelligence to analyse, develop and action."
