Police are continuing to target motorists over the festive period

The fourth week of the campaign has also seen police receive 71 calls from residents about motorists drinking and driving, which led to 11 arrests.

The "Don't gamble with your licence and someone's life' initiative which began on 1 December will end on 2 January.

About 44 people have been arrested so far. There has also been a drop in road traffic crashes, police said.

Ch Insp Rick Dowell, head of Dorset Police's operations tactical group - which includes its road policing unit - said: "I am extremely encouraged by the response from the public with information about drivers who continue to ignore our warnings about the dangers of driving after drinking alcohol.

"I appeal to the public to continue to make those vital phone calls that so often lead to arrests - and I would remind those drivers who continue to flout the law by driving after drinking that we will come after you and you might be next."
