The South recycles more than a quarter of its waste
Residents in the South are the best in the UK at recycling their rubbish, new government figures show.

People in Hampshire and Dorset recycled more than 25% of their household waste during 2002/2003, compared to a national average of 14.5%.

The two counties topped the results from the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra).

Hampshire, Portsmouth and Southampton local authorities are working towards meeting the target of 40% for 2006.
