The council are refusing to take excess waste |
A controversial new scheme where a council refuses to take excess rubbish is working, say waste managers. Some Bournemouth residents took issue with the tough new policy which sees any rubbish not fitting in wheelie bins being left on drives and doorsteps.
But the council's waste managers say their worst fears - that the move could lead to an increase in fly-tipping - have not been realised.
They say the scheme is succeeding as more rubbish is being recycled.

The new scheme was introduced on 1 August because Bournemouth was not meeting its recycling targets. Only rubbish fitting inside wheelie bins with the lid shut flat is being collected to force people to recycle more.
Refuse manager Rick Davis said they had prepared by posting leaflet to every home and putting stickers on residents' bins.
"From the monitoring we have done last week it seems to be working, there's definitely a reduction in excess refuse," he told BBC News Online.
"We will be monitoring the recycling centres to see whether recycling is up."
