Councillors hope the tough measure will encourage recycling |
People who try to squeeze too much rubbish into their bins will have it left to pile up outside their homes, a council has warned. From 1 August, refuse collectors in Bournemouth, Dorset, will only take away rubbish that fits into wheelie bins with the lids closed.
Officials hope the tough stance will force people to recycle more rubbish.
Householders in Bournemouth throw away 120,000 tonnes of waste every year, more than the national average.
The town currently recycles 23% of its rubbish, while the rest is sent to landfill sites.
Under new government targets, councils will be fined for sending too much waste to landfill.
John Hayter, a borough councillor, said: "The fact is that we are running out of space.
"No-one wants a rubbish dump in their back garden, and what if it came to that?
"We must get to grips with reducing all our rubbish and then recycling as much of that as possible, for our sake, our children's and the environment."
