Heather burning in the Peak District is under the microscope
Researchers are looking at ways of protecting the Peak District.

The most contentious issue being investigated is the impact of burning heather because conservationists say is harming wildlife.

The Peak District National Park, surrounded by big towns and cities, receives 22m visitors a year.

Christopher Dean from Moors for the Future says something needs to be done to ensure the long term survival of the park and jobs for those who work it.

He said: "We need to find out as much as we can about this moorland habitat to enable us to look after this into the future.

"People have always been a very important component of the Peak District land."
