Police investigating the death of a baby whose body was found encased in concrete in Cumbria have arrested two people on suspicion of murder.

The body of the baby, named Lara by police, was found in a garage in the hamlet of Barepot, near Workington, in September 2002.

It is thought she had been encased in the concrete block more than 10 years ago.

On Wednesday, Cumbria Police said a man and a woman had been arrested in Worcestershire in connection with their inquiries.

A spokesman said: "At just before 0800 GMT on Wednesday, officers from Cumbria Police working on Operation Lara, investigation into the death of a baby girl found in Workington in September 2002 and assisted by officers from West Mercia Constabulary attended a house in Droitwich Spa in Worcestershire.

"A 42-year-old man and a 41-year-old woman both from Droitwich Spa have been arrested in suspicion of murder."

They have been take to a police station in Worcester and are due to be transferred to a police station in Cumbria.
