The remains were discovered in a garage in Workington in September 2002.

At the time, it was uncertain whether the remains were human, but tests have confirmed they were that of a girl, aged about six months.

It is understood the remains had lain undiscovered for at between 10 and 15 years.

The police were called to the garage at Glennfield Place in the Barepot area of Workington on 13 September 2002, after a man doing some DIY work found the remains.

At the time a police surgeon failed to identify the remains and they were taken to the mortuary at the West Cumberland Hospital for further investigation.

Police say despite extensive research, a cause of death from the remains, has yet to be determined.

Cumbria Police are due to release more details later.
