Controversial proposals for a new �2m river bridge in Stratford-upon-Avon have been withdrawn.

Organisers said the plans for the arch bridge across the River Avon near the Royal Shakespeare Theatre were getting too expensive due to the credit crunch.

The bridge for pedestrians and cyclists has met with local opposition despite being approved by the county council.

A district council poll found 3,173 people against the plans and 441 in favour, with a turnout of 18.1%.

A clear majority wanted Lucy's Mill Bridge upgraded or a new bridge nearby.

The decision to withdraw the proposals was revealed to journalists at a news briefing in the town.
