The new bridge was chosen from five designs in a competition |
Residents of Stratford will be asked to vote on a controversial plan to build a new footbridge over the Avon. The bridge was approved by Warwickshire County Council despite strong objections 15 months ago but the local council has maintained its opposition.
A public meeting at Stratford Town Hall on Thursday heard district councillors announce a referendum on the 2m bridge, to be built behind the theatre.
The poll is due to take place between 28 March and 14 April.
The bridge - hailed as "the thinnest arch bridge in the world" - would be for the use of pedestrians and cyclists and has been designed by Ian Ritchie Architects and Schlaich Begerman & Partner.
Some 56% of townspeople who responded to a questionnaire in 2006 said they did not want the new bridge.
