Monika Mazlak is recovering in Birmingham Heartlands Hospital |
A 16-year-old Warwickshire girl who has leukaemia has had what doctors hope is a life-saving bone marrow transplant. A donor for Monika Mazlak from Stratford-on-Avon was found after an appeal on BBC Midlands Today and another on BBC WM.
Although compatible with Monika, there was not a 100% match, but the family decided to go ahead with surgery.
The transplant took place at Birmingham Heartlands Hospital on Friday. Monika's mother Sandi says she is recovering.
Monika, who moved to Warwickshire from the US five years ago, was diagnosed as having acute myloid leukaemia in May last year and has been having chemotherapy.
She said before going into hospital: "It's scary in a way. It's like looking into the darkness at the moment."
