Advice day for flooding victims
Helicopter over Boscastle
The report says about 100mm of rain fell in an hour
Residents in north Cornwall affected by heavy flooding in August are being invited to a special advice day.

It is the second such event staged by North Cornwall District Council at the request of local people, offering help with tax, customs and pensions.

Hundreds of people living in Boscastle, Canworthy Water, Crackington Haven and Bude, were hit by the flash floods.

The advice day on Thursday will also be attended by staff from the Inland Revenue and Citizens' Advice Bureau.

New culvert

The council's customer services team leader, Jackie Barton, says some people have asked for help with rebuilding and replacing their personal documentation.

A report issued on Wednesday by the Environment Agency on the Boscastle floods says 200mm of rain fell in 24 hours, with half the amount falling in 60 minutes.

The report also says the floods are amongst the most unusual ever recorded in Britain.

The study, which was prepared for the region's flood defence committee, also reports that only a few miles away, there was virtually no rainfall recorded.

Emergency services have worked to clear the debris
Several buildings were demolished by the flash flood in Boscastle

The agency report outlines emergency work being carried out in Boscastle.

The work currently under way to replace a culvert near the Wellington Hotel will reduce the risk of flooding.

But the report says it still would not be able to cope with a repeat of the events of last August, when the deluge caused two nearby rivers to burst their banks and a torrent of water to sweep through the village's main street.

More than 150 people were airlifted to safety - some from stranded cars, from roofs and from trees, where they had clambered to safety.

There were only eight reported casualties, with a broken thumb being the worst physical injury.
