Ring-road plan put to the public
The IDR
The scheme has been designed to tackle jams on the IDR
Controversial plans to turn a major town centre ring-road into a one-way system are being put to the public.

The 9m project to change Reading's Inner Distribution Road (IDR) into an anti-clockwise route was given the go-ahead by councillors in September.

Residents, businesses and emergency services are now being consulted on the plan, which aims to cut congestion.

The first of five public exhibitions throughout November is being held at Caversham Library on Wednesday evening.

Councillors hope the work will stop lorry drivers using the road as a rat-run from the M4 to Oxfordshire.

Negotiations with objectors

Journey times would increase for some motorists used to carrying out clockwise journeys.

There are also plans to demolish the IDR's infamous concrete flyover.

The public consultation period will be followed by negotiations with objectors early next year.

Work to redirect the road could begin by the end of next summer and could take up to six years to complete.
