Large fire at engineering factory

Forty firefighters have been tackling a large blaze at a Bedfordshire engineering factory during the evening.

The fire service was called to Kent Meters factory at Pondwicks Road, Luton, where a 200m (650ft) cordon was set up around an industrial estate.

Firefighters feared gas cylinders were in the building and they were tackling the flames from two aerial platforms.

Police advised residents to shut doors and windows and stay inside because of a large plume of smoke over the area.

A fire service spokeswoman said: "The cordon was set up as a precaution because engineering companies use acetylene gas and we did not know for certain if there were cylinders in the fire area."

The factory is on an industrial estate between the town centre and the main railway line on which services are still running.
