GCSE students warned off alcohol
Students have been urged not to use alcohol to commiserate or celebrate the release of GCSE results.

Berkshire and Oxfordshire Police said they will be implementing "Operation Hangover" on Thursday to ensure that everyone has a safe night out.

Supt Mike Ismay of the Berkshire East unit said they do not want to spoil the fun but they will not tolerate drinking by those under 18.

He said police will be on the lookout across the Thames Valley.

Increased youth deaths

"Underage drinking leads to anti-social behaviour and drunken teenagers are more likely to become victims of crime," Supt Ismay said.

He has also warned pubs and off-licences that it is a criminal offence to sell or deliver alcohol to a person under 18.

"Deaths from liver cirrhosis have also risen in the 25-34 age group, which is thought to be a consequence of increased drinking starting at an earlier age."
