 Road access to Ramsgate will be improved in a �64m scheme |
A �64m scheme to improve road access into north-east Kent has been granted government funding. East Kent Access Phase Two will provide 8km (5 miles) of new dual carriageway on roads around the Isle of Thanet.
It is one of 15 transport schemes which the government said it plans to fund in Kent, Surrey and Sussex over the next 10 years.
They include a proposed "rapid transit" bus route in Brighton and Hove and work on the A21 in Kent and East Sussex.
Kent County Council said the announcement of new funding for the East Kent Access scheme was excellent news.
Graham Gibbens, cabinet member for regeneration, said: "The completion of East Kent Access will help... strengthen road links to Kent International Airport [at Manston] and the port of Ramsgate."
The council said construction work, scheduled to take two years, could now begin in 2009.

It will see the dualling of current single carriageway roads, as well as a brand new stretch of dual carriageway.
The A256 will be improved between Richborough and the road's junction with the A299 at the Lord of the Manor roundabouts in Ramsgate.
Work is also planned on the A299 Thanet Way between Minster roundabout and the Lord of the Manor junction.
Other schemes in the South East include planned work for a Hindhead tunnel on the A3 in Surrey.
It has been approved for �320m funding, despite still awaiting the results of a public inquiry.
Money is also being made available for a new Bexhill to Hastings link road in East Sussex, the dualling of the A21 between Tonbridge and Pembury in Kent, and widening of the A23 between Handcross and Warninglid in West Sussex.
