City's new 'rapid transport' bid

The rejection of a new park-and-ride site for Brighton & Hove has led to plans for a "rapid transport scheme" in the city being revised.

An original funding bid for the fast, limited-stop service along the seafront included a link with the proposed park-and-ride at Patcham Court Farm.

However, that scheme was rejected by councillors last week.

The city council is now drawing up a new funding bid to try to keep its rapid transport proposals on course.

Councillor Gill Mitchell said: "We are now in discussions to revise the bid so that our position of top priority in the region is maintained and delivery of rapid transport is not delayed."

The council wants to have the scheme up and running by 2008.

The rapid transport system would connect Brighton Marina, Royal Sussex County Hospital, the King Alfred development, and the railway station and conference centre.
