Ways of easing congestion on main link roads along the Sussex coast are part of new long-term transport proposals. East and West Sussex county councils have both prepared local transport plans, which will now be handed to the Department for Transport by 31 March.
West Sussex's 10-year blueprint aims to get government backing for A27 work at Chichester, Arundel and Worthing.
East Sussex's five-year plan includes a new Bexhill to Hastings road to ease congestion and pollution on the A259.
A new link road is also planned to improve access to the port at Newhaven in East Sussex.
The county council's plan puts emphasis on encouraging more environmentally-friendly travel and reducing commuter congestion, areas in which it has just won an award from the Association for Commuter Transport.
Government assessment
In West Sussex, public transport issues remain a priority.
Its local transport plan suggests creating a "bus culture" among school and college pupils by implementing a concessionary fares scheme for young people.
The two local authorities, alongside Hampshire County Council and bus operator Stagecoach, are also working on improvements to the number 700 service between Brighton and Portsmouth.
The progress of the transport plans will be continually assessed by the Department for Transport and the Government Office for the South East.
