| Friday, 7 June, 2002, 09:42 GMT 10:42 UK Lucy Tzouliadis: Republican Lucy Tzouliadis is a doctor from Weston-Super-Mare and was born on 7 June 1977. She is a republican. What is your background? I am the youngest of four children born to a consultant radiologist and speech and language therapist. I spent six years at Bristol university where I gained a degree in Psychology as well as a medical degree and qualified in August 2001. Have you always been a republican? I have always been uneasy with the concept of the British monarchy. I believe that Britain should become a meritocracy - where people are given opportunities according to their ability, not according to their birth. Do you think it will be easy to change your point of view on the monarchy?
I believe that despite existing since the 10th century it is time for a change in our political system - it is time Britain became a republic. Elizabeth II became Queen aged 25 years old, the same age as you are now. How would you feel to have inherited so much responsibility at your age? I would have been very reluctant to inherit so much responsibility at a relatively young age. After all, it is not a job that one can leave and forget about when the clock hits five nor is it possible to retire at 65 years of age. Queen Elizabeth never had any real choice about accepting. Nevertheless, I can appreciate to a certain extent what she must have felt. When I graduated as a doctor, I was suddenly faced with great responsibility, having to suddenly make important decisions on a day-to-day basis regarding patient treatment and care. Tell us more about your experiences and how you formed your opinions on the royal family? From an early age I was encouraged to work hard and to make something of myself. A good education, was, for my parents, one of the most important things they could give me.
Whilst there, I worked hard to gain a place at university and to qualify as a doctor. I achieved what I did largely due to my own dedication and willingness to work. From this background, I came to believe that the concept of being born into a privileged position, rather than working for it and achieving it as a result of one's own merits, was fundamentally wrong. I realised that the monarchy represented the pinnacle of the anachronistic class system in Britain, promoting social division, snobbery and separating them from ordinary, hard-working people. I also formed my views as a result of listening to my father's thoughts and opinions. He is Greek and on coming to the UK 40 years ago, thought that our monarchy was an outdated institution that hindered our ability to become a modern democratic state. I couldn't help but agree with him. Now try and change Lucy's mind about the monarchy by sending her your comments via the form below |
