The debating chamber
Count Tolstoy and Bonnie Greer will speak at the debate
Hear Count Tolstoy and Bonnie Greer speak

What will the future hold for the British monarchy?

A head to head debate at the Oxford Union covered some of the issues surrounding the Royal family in the wake of the Queen's Golden Jubilee celebrations.

The Union is the world's foremost debating society, with a reputation for bringing international guests and speakers to Oxford.

Royalist vs. republican

It has been established for 175 years, aiming to promote debate and discussion not just in Oxford University, but across the globe.

Count Nikolai Tolstoy, great-nephew of the Russian author Leo Tolstoy and chairman of the International Monarchist League - which aims to support the monarchical system - throughout the world spoke on behalf of the royalists.

Alongside him was the playwright and critic, Bonnie Greer, who spoke for the republicans.

She has lived in Britain since 1986, where she has worked mainly in theatre with women and ethnic minorities.

Silver Jubilee Babes

Our Silver Jubilee Babes - Deborah, Lucy and Dougald - also attended the debate.

Deborah, Lucy and Dougald took part in an experiment to see if experts, celebrity guests and yourself - the general public - were able to change their minds about the monarchy.
