Ravi Shankar - Sitar Star

How genuine was the West's acceptance of Eastern music in the 60s?
In a Hardtalk Extra interview broadcast on Friday 29th July, Gavin Esler spoke to Ravi Shankar about his life in music.

Ravi Shankar is India's most famous musician.

The grandmaster of the sitar, his compositions and performances have inspired some of the greatest names in music.

He has worked with an extraordinarily diverse range of artists including The Beatles and Yehudi Menuhin.

Now aged 85 he has returned to the UK to play at the Proms.

He talks to Gavin Esler about the enormous power of the sitar and how the hippy movement got him all wrong.

HARDtalk Extra can be seen on Fridays on BBC World at 03:30 GMT, 08:30 GMT, 15:30 GMT, 18:30 GMT and 23:30 GMT.

It can also be seen on BBC News 24 at 04:30 and 23:30
