Yann Martel - Life of Pi
Is it harder to make the case for religion these days?
In a Hardtalk Extra interview broadcast on Friday 5th August, Mishal Husain spoke to Canadian author Yann Martel about the religious themes in his bestseller, Life of Pi.

After years as a struggling writer in Canada, Yann Martel found success with a remarkable story that enchanted the literary establishment.

Life of Pi, a fantastical tale of an Indian boy shipwrecked with a Bengal tiger, touched millions and won him the Booker prize.

The story explored the importance of religious faith and Martel wrote that it had the power to 'make the reader believe in God'.

With fundamentalism dominating the headlines, is he still convinced that religious conviction can be a force for good in the modern world? He talks to Mishal Husain.

HARDtalk Extra can be seen on Fridays on BBC World at 03:30 GMT, 08:30 GMT, 15:30 GMT, 18:30 GMT and 23:30 GMT.

It can also be seen on BBC News 24 at 04:30 and 23:30
