| Friday, 13 December, 2002, 18:32 GMT Victoria's Story ![]() Victoria's Story: 4x4 Reports was on BBC One on Monday 16 December at 1930 GMT. The murder of 7-year-old Victoria Climbie was one of the worst cases of child abuse in Britain. She died of torture at the hands of those entrusted to care for her. In the first in depth television interview with Victoria's parents, Fiona Bruce travels to the Ivory Coast where the family is still waiting for a report into the tragedy to be published. Three years after her death, Francis and Berthe Climbie cannot understand why the British authorities failed to save their daughter. Forgotten children International athlete Kris Akabusi, himself an abuse victim, reveals how foster children are let down by local authorities. It is estimated there are 10,000 children - mostly of African descent - in private foster care in Britain. The onus is on carers and parents to let social services know about their arrangements. But if, like Victoria's Great Aunt, they decide not to inform the authorities, the children can be left vulnerable and unprotected. Frontline protection Our cameras follow a day in the life of a child care worker in a deprived area of Bristol. "I went into social work to do direct work with families," says Frances "It's very sad there just isn't the time and the resources to do that." David Akinsanya, himself brought up in care, reports on why social work practice needs a drastic overhaul. Child Protectors One child dies every week killed by a parent or carer. Childline gets 25,000 calls a year from children suffering abuse. It is vital we provide ways for children to talk about abuse. Esther Rantzen meets the child detectives who are learning to protect each other. |
